Giuliana's Baptism

Giuliana was baptised!

She was the youngest of eight children being baptised that day, and none of them cried. She wore the same baptismal gown that Gabby wore for her baptism and that I wore when I was baptised as a baby. So, the dress and bonnet have some significance.

Giuliana's godparents live out of state and weren't able to make it to the baptism, so our family was joined by two sets of grandparents and our au pair, Sarah, to witness and celebrate the baptism.
Gabby and Rocco were a little busy during the service, but they didn't create any big scenes (even after Rocco knocked his head on the pew ahead of us and didn't cry!) so I considered that a big success.
Rocco fell asleep on the way home from church so he missed soccer, and Gammy and Papa didn't get to see him play. But, when he woke up we ate brunch, cake and then we all went over to Gabby's soccer practice to watch her.
Giuliana was SUCH a good little girl all day. She looked SO darling her little dress... a bit amish, actually, with the bonnet. ;)

Rocco's 2.25 Birthday Party!

Finally… Rocco celebrated his second birthday with some of his little friends!!

Forget the fact that he’s actually two and a quarter… he was so happy to finally have a party! For an entire week preceding the party, Rocco kept saying “I want my birthday party!” and “I want birthday cake!” while jumping up and down with huge, super-cute puppy dog eyes.

The party was at a local park, the weather was gorgeous and we were joined by wonderful friends and family. Some of Rocco’s friends that were able to join us included Kiya, Livi, Maddy, Ewan, Kyle, Leo and Van. Sadly, some of his other current best pals (Giovanni, Sofia, Leah and Ayla).

The birthday cake took a beating. The minute we took it out of the box, Rocco pushed the train into the cake and swiped his fingers into the frosting to taste-test it. Luckily, we managed to get a couple photos of us with him and the cake before the sun decided to melt the frosting off the front side of the cake. Yummmm. After eating and playing for a while, we eventually lit the candles, sang the birthday song and let Rocco blow out his candles. Surprisingly, Rocco acted shy as we sang to him, but then he jumped at the chance to blow out the candles. Seconds later, the cake was covered in kid spit and finger/handprints. Hmmm… wonder why none of the adults wanted cake?!

Is it strange that Gabby and Rocco were the only two kids whose faces and upper bodies looked like they had been dipped in frosting? Literally – they were both covered in frosting.

We also did the piñata thing. Only, the Martino’s tend to always add our own excitement to things like this. First of all, we forgot a string to hang the piñata from. So, Dan decided to hold it with his hand. Yeah… brilliant, I know.

The piñata was so strong that after two rounds of all the kids trying to crack it open, Dan decided he would just smash it himself. He of course ended up hitting his own hand that was holding the piñata. I’m laughing as I type this. It was hilarious and very strange at the same time. And, to make things even more interesting, Dan took another swing and the end of the club he was using flung off and flew right between two au pairs, Sarah, and Noris, and into a sand pit. It looked like a scene from a movie as they both had super-quick reflexes to lean ever so slightly and miss the flying club. And, it landed in a sand pit where kids play. Imagine the shock and horror we would have caused had Mr. Martino knocked out an innocent bystander. Sheeesh. I assure you… nobody was hurt. But, it was hilarious and we were all laughing so hard.

Anyway – the party was a success and our little dude finally celebrated the big TWO!

Rocco's first day of PRESCHOOL!

Rocco started school today.

It was a day of mixed emotions for me. I was very excited for Rocco, as he is socially more than ready to be in a pre-school environment. I was sad though too… because Matteo should have started school today too. He would have loved it. He would have loved all the new toys, new friends, and eating lunch with lots of other little people. It was also a little difficult today knowing that the day Rocco started school is the ten month anniversary of Matteo’s last day with us.

I can’t believe it’s been ten months since Matt died. So many emotions. So many thoughts. So many feelings I can’t even begin to share in this sort of forum.

Rocco was very excited this morning. I drove him to school and told him how proud I was of him for staring school. Then, he went on to ask about who else was proud of him. It was so cute…

The second we got into the classroom he was off grabbing big airplane toys and then he moved on to animals… making them talk to each other. I could also see he was interested in the other kids in the classroom and he started talking with them as I was leaving the classroom. They of course looked at him like “Who’s the new kid and why is he talking to us?”

I tried to get a kiss and hug out of him before I left, but he was too focused on the toys. So I left. I looked in from outside the classroom door and he looked at me through the glass. I waved at him. I blew him a kiss. But, he just looked at me. He probably thought “Huh. What’s my mom doing out there and why is she being so sappy. Why doesn’t she just come back in here and watch me play?”

Dan went over to the school around the lunch hour so he could bring a few things that I forgot to bring this morning. As he entered the class, the teacher signaled for him to leave and she went out to talk with him. Apparently, they had just come in from outside and Rocco was VERY upset that he had to go back inside. Dan asked how Rocco was adjusting and if he was behaving. Miss S said Rocco threw a couple playground balls over the fence while outside, but other than that he was doing well.

Apparently, Rocco ended up seeing Dan. And, as Dan was leaving he saw Rocco get his sad *I’m about to cry face* and then Dan heard a very loud “I WANT MY DADDY!!!”

I picked Rocco up at the end of the day and he was laying on one of the nap mats with Miss J sitting next to him. My first thought was that he must not be feeling good. But, Miss J said he had just fallen asleep not too long ago. She said he didn't nap during naptime. Instead, he would cry a little, and whine "I want my mommy" in between looking at a book and playing with a truck. One hour into the nap, he started crying really hard so Miss J took him outside to play ball and water plants and then he was fine. But, then when she had to bring him inside again I guess he was pretty upset and had a little tantrum. Uh oh!

Miss J told me he finally started to fall asleep on Miss S's shoulder during story time at 4:45pm. Poor kid - he must have been exhausted!

I'm still shocked the little guy didn't nap! Especially since the school nap is the same time as his nap at home. But, I'm pretty sure he was not a happy camper mainly because he couldn't nap in HIS bed with his football blanket.

Looks like Rocco might need some time to adjust to this "school" thing. Hopefully, he'll adjust fast because it's hard on mommy too!

Regardless, we're so PROUD of our little, big boy today for starting school!! YAY ROCCO!!

She's ROLLING!

Giuliana started rolling from tummy to back on Monday! We're so proud of our little angel and can't believe she'll already be 4 months old in another week.

Rocco... the soccer star!

Rocco is getting SO big... he now weighs just 2lbs less than Gabby.

He is now actively involved in both swimming lessons and soccer. He LOVES soccer class. LOVES. IT. He talks about "my soccer class" all the time and really looks forward to soccer class day. It amazes me how coordinated this child is and how quickly he takes to different athletic-related skills. Yeah... let's hope an athletic scholarship is in his future!

Rocco will start going to school twice a week in May. He is really excited about it and we're excited for him. He is very interested in counting and numbers, but isn't too picky about the order of the numbers, often counting "4, 8, 1, 6, 10". He is also interested in letters and when he sees letters on blocks he'll start saying "A, B, C, A, B, C". He also really enjoys coloring and drawing. He especially likes coloring walls around the house and drawing all over mommy's important papers. He ALWAYS draws and colors balloons. Honestly. If you ask him what he's drawing he'll always say balloons. He is obsessed with balloons. He has had the balloon obsession ever since Matt's funeral.

He still loves trains and when not playing with actual trains, he'll spend time lining up his cars, airplanes, boxes or even daddy's credit cards to make a choo choo train. He loves playing with stomp rockets, riding his scooter, his bike and the cars outside. He does front flips on the trampoline, can hit baseballs from the pitching machine and he LOVES playing football and baseball with Dan. It's super cute to see him and Dan throwing balls back and forth or practice batting. He can throw the ball like such a little pro but still needs to polish up his catching skills. It's funny, because you often hear stories about how twins have complementary personalities or skill sets. Well, one of Rocco and Matteo's was that Rocco could always throw the balls exactly to his target, but couldn't catch a ball. He wouldn't even try (I think it was just him being a little lazy!). But, Matteo could catch a ball from the time he was a year old. He LOVED it when people would throw him a ball to catch. But, Matteo couldn't throw it very well at a target. So... we always joked that some day, Rocco would be a quarterback or pitcher and Matteo would be a receiver or a catcher.

Rocco loves his sisters! Whenever he sees Giuliana, he always says "Giuliana so cute!" in a very high pitched voice as if he's trying to talk soft and gentle to her. He'll give her sweet kisses on her forehead and pats her tummy. Gabby is his best pal. When she walks in the door from school or wherever, she's always greeted with little Rocco running to the door yelling "Gabby's home!". They play really nice together 70% of the time. And they know just how to push each other's buttons the other 30%.

Outside of the first two months after Matteo's death, Rocco now shows no real emotional signs of "missing" Matteo. I'm not sure he even has memories of Matt. We don't yet have that level of communication with Rocco to find out if he remembers anything and/or what he remembers, if anything. He is however able to recognize Matteo if we point to a photo of Matt and ask him who it is. If he sees Matteo's blankey, he'll tell us it's Tato's blankey. If we show him a photo of the twins when they were little, he will often not know which is Matteo and which one he is. When we show him videos of him and Matteo together... he watches so intently. SO intently, in fact, that it makes me wonder if he is trying to remember Matt. Or maybe that he does remember him or that moment, but doesn't know how to ask about him or where he is now, or why he isn't with us. If we ask Rocco where Matteo his. He'll say "Matteo died" or "Tato in Heaven".

Gabby has taken over the role of being Rocco's play-mate. Rocco plays with her, just as he once did with Matteo. When she is at school, he asks where she is. About two months after Matteo died, I remember Rocco was obsessed with asking where people were. He would ask "Where dada go?", "Where mama go?", "Where Babby go?". I was convinced he was obsessed with asking where people went because he wanted to know if they would come back again. When Matteo died, he couldn't yet ask that question. His only clues to us that he wanted to know where Matteo went were his constant tantrums, meltdowns, lack of eating and him constantly saying "Tao" when looking at Matteo's crib or in the mirror. Which would then be followed by him falling onto the floor and crying.

This little dude melts my heart and I love him beyond words.

Oh yeah... EASTER

Easter was a little different this year for a couple of reasons...

All of us but Gabby had come down with a nasty cold, which ended up turning into more for both Rocco and Giuliana. And, it didn't help that the weather was nasty for the Easter holiday. Usually the weather is nice and warm by the time Easter rolls around. But this year we had a torrential downpour on Easter Sunday. Very strange, as I have no memory of it ever raining in April in the 11 years I've lived here. It's almost as if our sadness for Matteo not being with us was visible through the pounding rain. That's how I felt anyway.

Anyway, we still did a little celebrating of the Easter holiday. We went to grandma and grandpa Bailey's house on Saturday night for dinner. And while we were there, the kids did an egg hunt and colored hard-boiled eggs with cousin Courtney and grandma Leo. Gabby did a really good job coloring the eggs and was very focused on making them look spectacular. Rocco was more interested in swiping the eggs off the table and smashing them apart... he was fascinated with how the shell would break off and then the egg was hard inside. When he got over the thrill of making grandma Leo's floor a mess... he moved on to throwing eggs into the egg dye. Thankfully, Courtney was able to somewhat tame the little fella so he didn't make a bigger mess. Giuliana was stuck to me like glue... but even I managed to do a big save as Rocco nearly pulled a cup with dye onto the floor. Sheesh... I nearly had a heart attack.

We all woke up feeling even more sick on Easter Sunday. And, with the heavy rain falling it ended up becoming a pajama and movie day. That is... AFTER the kids hunted for their Easter baskets and all the eggs that the Easter bunny hid around the house. Gabby was SO excited and screamed when she found her basket. Rocco was excited too... but spent a lot of time looking at his sister like "what are you screaming about?" And, I didn't even get a photo of Giuliana with her basket before Gabby and Rocco pulled everything out.

Matteo has been heavy on my mind again lately, causing me to have more "bad" days. Bad days suck and I feel enveloped in a black hole on those days. I finally took a few friends up on their offer to "listen" whenever I need it... and ended up sobbing into the phone.

Still waiting for this grief stuff to get easier.

Oh the irony...

Giuliana is 3 months old now. I honestly can't believe it. Time flies.

Giuliana slept her first 10 hour stretch last night from 9:30pm-7:30am. She's rolling onto her side, and when she's on her tummy, she's almost rolling onto her back. She LOVES when people talk to her... she'll smile and coo and she kicks her legs real hard. She's just beyond precious and we all love her so very much.

This past week was crazy, as Dan was in Boston for work, our au pair was on vacation, Rocco was diagnosed with bronchitis and Giuliana was then diagnosed with a double ear infection. So, every trip outside the house involved dragging three kids along with me... to the grocery store, school drops-offs and pick-ups, the pharmacy, etc. Everything had to revolve around Giuliana's nursing and her and Rocco's naps. And, if that wasn't enough... it was going to the be the first time I didn't have another adult staying with me in the house since Matteo died. I was dreading it. A big part of me was SO scared... especially since Rocco and Giuls were sick..I was so worried something bad was going to happen... again.

I knew it was another big hurdle I would eventually need to cross. And while I was dreading it and didn't think I was quite ready yet.... I did it. By Thursday, I was SO sleep deprived. I must have checked the kids a million times throughout the night to make sure they were still breathing.

I was SO EXCITED to see Dan walk in that front door again!

Anyway, on Saturday... it was unusually cold here. So, we decided to bring Giuliana in for her 3 month photos. And, since we all went together... we ended up getting a few family shots too.

The moment we walked into the studio they assigned us to, we pulled the curtain shut, the kids sprinted across the floor and we heard another mother outside of our studio say "Look at Matteo!"

I looked at Dan and almost fell over. I didn't believe my ears... so I asked Dan if he just heard what I heard. And, he looked at me and said "Yeah... I heard it. Matteo."

The irony.

There we were, with our 3 living children... both of us knowing/thinking about how Matteo should have been with us. And, another mother outside of OUR studio talks about Matteo. Her Matteo. It's not like Matteo is even that common of a name, right? In that moment... I couldn't have wished harder that it was MY Matteo she was talking about.

Pure coincidence?

I don't know. But, gosh... these zingers just tear me apart and make me want to believe they are little signs from OUR little Matteo.

When we left the studio with the prints, all I could think about was what Matteo would have looked like yesterday... where he would have been standing/sitting... what he would have worn. I contemplated photoshopping his little face into the photos. Seriously - I contemplated this. But, I ruled it out for the obvious reasons. It just wouldn't look right and people would probably think I was NUTS. I don't want to be nuts. I just want my baby back. I want him to grow with us and be part of our family again.

Nine months have passed and I still haven't been able to display a recent family photo in our house because Matteo isn't in them. I look at recent family photos and I see incomplete photos... he's missing. Gone. Just like that. Frozen forever in time as an 18 month old.

A friend, who also just happens to be a an amazing professional photographer (David - DNK Digital) took some great photos of us last fall when our family was newly broken and Giuliana was 7 months along. I love the photos, but until now could never even post them on the blog.

Maybe it's time to contemplate crossing the next big hurdle of displaying a more recent family photo in the house.

Maybe.

9 months

Hard to believe it's been 9 months.

Here's a cute video of the boys from April 9, 2009. So typical of how the twins played together around this time last year. I would ask them "Where's Matteo?" and "Where's Rocco?" and they'd sometimes get confused about who was who... as evident in the :50 of this clip.

I hope Rocco will enjoy watching these someday. Who knows... maybe they'll trigger some memories for him.

We love you little Matt... wherever you are.

A side note to the previous blog post...

This is simply a side note to my previous blog post.

Every day we talk with Gabby and Rocco about how Matteo is still with us. We talk about how he can hear us talking, how he sits on our shoulders and watches over us and how he is in our hearts. When a humming bird, butterfly or dragonfly come within view... Gabby will say "Look - there's Matteo!" When we see rainbows - it's because of Matteo.

Matteo is also a special star in the sky and he'll smile at us through the moon.

Matteo is in so many wonderful, beautiful things we see every day. He has angel super-powers now. And, Gabby knows Matteo is constantly giving us signs that he is still here with us

We have had many discussions with Gabby about how some day we'll see Matteo again. We talk about how Matteo is up in Heaven with God and Grandpa Jimmy amongst other relatives and friends that I won't list here.

I'm fearful at this point to tell Gabby that God took Matteo from us for whatever reason. Her next question would be "But WHY did God take Matteo from us?" and "But what if God wants to take ME?" At this point, I could see her thinking of God as something to be fearful of. And, I'd prefer she likes God at this point, because she thinks/knows Matteo is in Heaven with God.

I can't possibly tell you how many conversations we have every day, week or month about Matteo and why he died, where he is and what he is doing now and if he can still see and hear us.

We talk to him every night. We pray to him. We tell him secrets and all about our day and the fun things we did. And, we ask him every night to watch over us and keep us safe and healthy.

Matteo left behind a twin brother, a big sister, his daddy, his mommy and his unborn sister. We loved him more than words could ever explain. We tell Gabby that Matteo met Giuliana in Heaven and that her birthmark is a kiss from him. But she is constantly reminding us "Yeah... but he didn't get to meet her in real life. He can't see her like we see her." To which we respond "Yes, but he can see her all the time, even while we are sleeping."

The previous blog post is a shortened summary of a conversation I felt compelled to share. It so innocently exposes how a 4 year old processes death, how they connect the dots to their own life, and how no matter what your answer is, their question will still be "Why?"

Four year olds are much smarter than we give them credit for.

While I often find myself trying to explain Matteo's death to Gabby, I am constantly asking the same exact question... "Why?" and "Why Matteo?"

No matter how old you are, the death of a child is so very difficult to understand. Even more difficult when the cause of death can not be determined.

Grief is no longer just a word, a conversation, or a study topic. It is very much a part of our life now. It's a daily battle. A constant journey. Grief over the loss of your child is incredibly heavy. Some days are bad. Some days are good. And some days are terrible beyond words.

3/23/10

"But WHY did he die?"

Death is unexplainable to a 4 year old. But sadly, Gabby knows that when someone or a pet dies... you don't see them again.

Our neighbors across the street had to put their dog, Hammer, to sleep several weeks ago because he was in a lot of pain and very old. We never told Gabby about it. We thought we'd cross that road when it needed to be crossed and there was no reason to discuss it until the time came.

Well... the time came.

We were at a birthday party for a 2yo neighbor. The party was at a park, and some families brought their pets. Gabby saw a black dog sitting next to our neighbors who live across the street and immediately asked "Where is Hammer?" It caught everyone off guard, but my neighbor told Gabby very gently that Hammer had died. She told Gabby that he was very old and he was in a lot of pain and Hammer was very happy now up in Heaven.

It was like a brick hit Gabby on the head. She was suddenly so sad.

There we were, at a birthday party and all the other kids were having fun and playing. But, my 4 year old was deep in thought... because her baby brother, her little constant buddy and friend, died 8+ months ago and she still can't understand it. But, she knows that she never sees him anymore because he died. She has a constant, daily reminder about death and how it changes your life... even if you're only 4 years old.

It makes my heart break knowing that she has to try and understand something that it only seems fair for adults to try and have to understand.

For the rest of the birthday party, Gabby would wander away for a minute or two... and then come right back to me or my neighbor and say "Why did Hammer die?" We would respond with "Because he was very old and he couldn't walk anymore. He was in a lot of pain." And, Gabby would then ask "But WHY did he die?"

I told her Hammer was up in Heaven with Matteo now. I told her Matteo was probably so excited to have Hammer there with him because he LOVED Hammer (honestly - he did), and they were probably running and playing all over Heaven together.

We couldn't give her an answer that would *answer* her question "But WHY?"

That night, I noticed Gabby was still awake in her bed as I was going to get into my bed. I went into her room and asked her why she wasn't sleeping yet. She said she couldn't sleep and that she wasn't tired. I could see her mind spinning, so I asked her what she was thinking about.
Gabby: "Mommy... why did Hammer die?"
Me: "Honey, he was very old... and he was in a lot of pain. Now he doesn't have any more pain and he can run around in Heaven with Matteo."
Gabby: "Why did Matteo die?"
Me: "We don't know, Gabby. The doctors don't know... they worked really hard to figure it out but they couldn't figure it out."
Gabby: "And, the police don't know either?"
Me: "No, the police don't know either."
Gabby: "Did the police go and get Hammer when he died?"
Me: "No."
Gabby: "Just for Matteo?"
Me: "Yes. Because we didn't know Matteo was going to die. He wasn't supposed to die. So, when we found him that morning, the police came to try and help us understand why he died."
Gabby: "Did Hammer die on his face like Matteo?"
Me: "No. Hammer didn't die on his face."
Gabby: "Matteo's face looked like this (showing me) when he died. Is that what Hammer's face looked like? Did he die on his face?"
Me: "No. No... Hammer didn't die on his face."
Gabby: "I saw Matteo's eye open when daddy tried to save him. Did Hammer's eyes open?"
Me: "No. Hammers eyes didn't open."
Gabby: "Mommy... but WHY did Hammer die?"
Me: "He was very old honey... he was ready to die."
Gabby: [thinking... starting to look concerned] "Mommy, do little girls get old?
Me: "No, little girls don't get old. That's why they're called *little girls*."
Gabby: "Mommy, I miss Matteo a lot. I loved him. He was SO cute."
Me: "I know Gabby. I do too. We'll miss him forever."

I hugged her so tight. I had tears dripping from my eyes. How do you explain the unexplainable to a little girl? I look at her, sleepless late at night... and I feel like I am looking at the miniature version of me with the same sleep problem. Why did Matteo die? Why?

Because honestly... I still don't know why. And, I want to know too.

"No Matteo?"

I called to sign the kids up for the spring session of swimming lessons the other day. We've been using the same swim school for over a year now and have been really happy with it.

ME: "I'd like to enroll my kids in swimming lessons."
SWIM SCHOOL: "Ok, great. What's your last name?"
ME: "Martino"
SWIM SCHOOL: "Ok. And, what are the names of the children you'd like to enroll?
ME: "Gabby and Rocco"
SWIM SCHOOL: "No Matteo?"
ME: [silence.... catching my breath] "Ummm... no. No Matteo."
SWIM SCHOOL: "Ok... blah, blah, blah"

I couldn't hear the rest of the call. I felt like I was kicked in the gut, unexpectedly. The rest of the call, I debated whether I should tell this person that Matteo had died and to remove him from our records. But, I couldn't bring myself to do it. I was talking to a teenager. I didn't want to tell this stranger my child died last summer and to remove him from our records. I didn't want him to say "Oh, I'm so sorry!" and for me to feel compelled to say "Don't worry... you didn't know. It's ok." Because, I wasn't ok... I was still trying to catch my breath.

I hung up the phone and I sobbed. Matteo should be here. And, he should be in swimming lessons with Gabby and Rocco. Why isn’t he here? I SWEAR he was JUST here… where the hell is my third child?! He loved swimming lessons.

Last year at this time, we had all 3 kids enrolled in classes at the same time/night. Gabby was in a class that didn't need a parent. The twins were enrolled in a parent/tot class, so Dan would swim with Rocco and I would swim with Matteo. It was awesome. Gabby was starting to become a little fish. But, it was the first swim class for Rocco and Matteo... and they LOVED it. We couldn't stop Rocco from jumping in and going under water. It was shocking, actually. That child is a fish and has no fear. And, Matteo really liked going underwater too, but not as much as Rocco. So, I selfishly used the class to just snuggle and talk with him in the water and play the water games. I never pushed him or forced him to do more than I felt like he wanted to do on any given day.

Those swimming lessons were some of my favorite memories with him from last spring. Actually, both Dan & I loved it even though it made for a super-crazy week night. We'd finish work, run to swim lessons with 3 kids, pick-up take out on the way home for dinner, throw 3 kids in a bath, and then start the twins bedtime rituals so we could get them down by 8pm. It was crazy. But, it was awesome.

This was also when Matteo started doing his silly *crazy eyes*. His crazy eyes were essentially him giving someone a very stern, mean stare with his eyes, while putting his pouty lips together so he'd look like he was really not happy with whoever was looking at him. The crazy eyes were only given to people who were trying to take Matteo out of my arms, or to people he didn't know that were looking at him when he was in my arms. After he’d give the crazy eyes look… he’d bury his face into my shoulder for a minute or two, and then give the crazy eyes look again, if needed. Unfortunately, the swim instructor got a lot of Matteo's crazy eyes... and I would laugh so hard with the swim instructor. It was so funny and cute!

I of course LOVED that he would hold me so tight when giving out his crazy eyes to people he didn't know. And, I always felt SO loved by him (even though my heart would melt) when he'd give crazy eyes to Dan or to our au pair when I had to hand him over to go to work or help with the other kids.

He was such a little momma's boy. I miss our little dude so much.

Giuliana's 2 Month Update

Wow. It's hard to believe Giuliana is 2 months old already. We're so in love with this little lady! She couldn't possibly be any cuter and she is truly such a good baby. In the past 3 weeks, her and I have really struck a great rhythm with each other... and I think this might be leading to a bit of mommy attachment.

Giuliana is becoming very responsive to interaction. She loves to smile and talk to us... lots of "cooo", "ooooo", and "ahhhh". She also likes laying on the playmat and reaching for and swinging at her little toys.

She is also a great sleeper so far. I can't complain. She'll settle down for the night somewhere between 9-11:30pm. Her first stretch of sleep is currently between 6-8 hours. Then, I'll feed her and if it's before 6am, she'll usually go back to sleep. If it's after 6am, she seems to prefer being awake for a while.

Below are some 2 month updates for our precious little lady.

Two Month Growth Stats:
Height: 22 1/4 inches (75th %ile)
Weight: 10lbs 11oz (50th %ile)
Head: 39.5cm

Giuliana's likes:
* Eating & sleeping
* Looking out windows at sunlight, or in the direction of the TV
* Falling asleep on mommy or daddy's chest after eating
* Going for walks/runs with me. I put her in the Bugaboo bassinet so she can relax laying down and she usually falls asleep by the time we're home.

Dislikes:
* She's not a fan of being swaddled tightly.
* She doesn't really like drinking from a bottle, but she'll do it if mommy's not around and she's hungry.
* She will not drink formula.

So far, Giuliana's list of *firsts* include:
* First ear infection
* First battle with bronchitis and bronchiolitis
* Numerous eye infections, which we believe have been the result of a clogged tear duct
* Drank from a bottle for her daddy
* First movie (She joined Dan & I on Valentine's day for lunch and a movie. She was SO good. I never had to leave the theatre because she was quiet as a mouse and slept most of the movie.)
* First lunch date (with Dan & I)
* First visit to the mall
* First walk
* First playdates. One with our neighbor, Van, and one with Teddy and Carter (sons of two of my college girlfriends).

She's a great baby! After having a baby with colic, followed by twins... this baby is easy. Even when she's sick - she seems somewhat easy. Yes, I still feel sleep deprived and yes that comes with it's own challenges. But, life is as good as it can possibly be right now considering the circumstances. My only wish being to have my little Matteo back and my only complaint being that every day doesn't have 6 more hours.

Good Times With The Grandparents

We've been lucky to have recent visits from grandparents.
Gammy was here for a two and a half weeks in January. She was here to celebrate Rocco and Matteo's birthday and welcome Giuliana into our lives. Her visit also meant lots of story time, indoor & outdoor play, working on crafts and making cookies. Gabby loved all the craft projects and cuddle time with Gammy. And, Rocco started showing signs of his male chivalry by saying "Rocco help you, Gammy?" as my mom would get up off the sofa or be coming down the stairs. His sweetness would easily melt any girl's heart.

Gammy and Papa then came back to visit us together in early February. Papa hadn't yet met Giuliana and the last time he saw the kids was early August. The kids were really excited to see them. Their visit included trips to the ice cream store, playing outside on bikes and scooters, walks, park time, and some Valentine gifts. Rocco kept Papa very busy with lots of athletic activity... mostly throwing, kicking and hitting balls. The little guy spent a lot of time making his Papa laugh and they had a solid bond by the end of the visit.

Grandma Leo and Grandpa Kenny also came to visit us recently so they could meet Giuliana. The day Giuliana was born, they spent the day helping my mom and aunt Trish with the kids. Back in 2008, they started visiting us weekly a few months after the twins were born to help with the babies and give me a little break. The kids LOVED their visits, and I was SO grateful for all their help and the fun conversations. A year ago... Matteo would bring Kenny a ball right as he'd walk in the room so he could play catch. Now, Rocco continues on that path of keeping Kenny busy the entire visit with footballs, soccer balls & baseballs.
The kids also get to see Grandma Linda quite regularly, as Dan will take them over to visit her when he does errands with his mom. Gabby always gets excited to see Grandma Linda and will talk her ear off the entire time they are grocery shopping, etc. And, she loves it with Grandma Linda sends her home with a trinket of some sort.
