Before Matteo died, I had an unbiased opinion regarding paranormal experiences. I always found it both interesting and kind of scary to hear stories from other people. I always wanted to believe that people really do have a sixth sense, but they have to be open to it. I always wanted to believe that children have an uncanny ability to see/hear/feel things that adults do not, because they don’t fear the things adults do. And, they are naturally unbiased. I also wanted to believe that when a loved one dies… they have a strange ability to somehow communicate with you and let you know they’re still with you.
Then, Matteo died.
For 8+ weeks, I have been contemplating sharing some of my stories in this forum, of signs that Matteo is still with us. But, after last night, I feel compelled to share a few of the odd things that have happened to me/us. I think Matteo has been hard at work… randomly giving us signs that he is still here with us.
THE FIRST SIGN:
The date was July 13th. It was two nights after Matteo’s funeral. I can’t recall the exact time, but it was probably in the 10 o’clock hour. My parents were sitting in the TV room, watching TV. Dan was working late. It was dark outside. No wind… it was a normal, calm, warm summer evening. I was walking around the house putting stuff away. As I was walking through the dark kitchen, I saw in the corner of my eye a bright red light outside our back door. I remember stopping, thinking that was really strange… and wondering where this red light was coming from. So, I reversed. It wasn’t there anymore. I was curious though. So, I walked out the back door and looked in the direction of where the light came from. There sat this crazy zebra horse that Matteo just LOVED. Every single time Matteo walked out the back door, the first toy he would gravitate towards was the crazy zebra horse. So, I walked over to the zebra horse, and I touched it. I wanted to see if it would light-up again. It didn’t. I then patted it on the back. It still didn’t light up. Then, I shook it. It lit up. And there was that bright red light I saw. Sure enough. I got goose bumps from head to toe. Literally.
I knew it was Matteo. He did this. I think he was trying to tell me he was ok and he was happy.
Never before had I ever seen this toy light up by itself. And since that night, I have not seen this toy light up again by itself.
THE SECOND SIGN:
The date was July 20th. It had been 2 weeks and 2 days since I last held Matteo in my arms. I was really lonely for him. I couldn’t sleep. It was late. Everyone was sleeping. I was downstairs, by myself, watching the E! channel on TV, sitting on the sofa with my laptop. I missed Matteo so much that I decided I was going to watch all the videos I had posted of him on the blog. I just wanted to hear his voice. I wanted to see his face. I wanted to see his wiggle. So, I turned off the TV and threw the remote an arm’s length away from me on the sofa. I just watched and listened to Matteo. I felt so close to him by doing this. Of course, I was also crying and wiping tears from my eyes. To say I was missing him is such an understatement… just so sad and hurting.
Then, I heard a click from the TV. The TV turned on. By itself. BY. ITSELF. And, what’s even stranger is that it turned on to a sports channel. There I sat, by myself, in a dark room with Matteo’s videos playing on my laptop. And, the TV turns on by itself to a baseball game on channel. Have I mentioned before that Matt would actually sit with Dan and watch baseball?
I was scared to move. Seriously. I looked to my right to make sure the remote control was still sitting there. Yup. There it was. The remote hadn’t moved. And, I wasn’t sitting on it. I literally said out loud “Matteo, you’re scaring mommy.”
I continued to sit on the sofa. I was afraid to move. Afraid to get up. Afraid to turn the TV off. But, I KNEW Matteo was there with me. I was practically channeling the kid. And, then he tosses me this big ‘ol sign that he was there with me… and it freaks me out.
It still warms my heart to think about that moment. It was simply the strangest thing that had ever happened to me. And, I just knew… with my whole heart, that it was Matteo who turned that TV on.
We’ve owned this TV for 3 years. Neither Dan, nor I have ever seen it turn on by itself. We’ve never come downstairs in the morning to discover the TV being on. And, it has not turned on by itself since then.
A THIRD SIGN:
It was a Sunday morning and exactly 6 weeks since we discovered Matteo dead in his crib. I woke up at 4:45am and felt this crazy urge to go and check on Rocco. My mind was telling me I had to go check on him. What if something was wrong? What if something happened to him in his sleep. I sat there… thinking. My heart was racing. I was having trouble breathing. What if I go check on him and something is wrong? I was so scared, I couldn’t get out of bed. I didn’t want to see or experience anything so awful again in my life. My mind was racing. He’s ok. He’s ok. Your mind is playing tricks on you, Jodi. Calm down. I must have been laying there talking to myself for at least 10-15 minutes. Frozen. Scared to move. Scared to check on Rocco. But, not able to sleep again unless I was going to get up and check on Rocco and make sure the same tragedy hadn’t happened to him.
Gabby suddenly woke up. It was just after 5am. She popped up, wide awake and she leaned over and kissed my forehead. She said “Mommy, Matteo told me I needed to kiss you.” She kissed me again. She said “You get two kisses from Matteo.” He told me to tell you that he’s watching over us. We’re safe. He’s keeping us safe and everything is going to be ok. He loves us and he’s still with us.”
Tears started running from my eyes. I asked Gabby “How do you know Matteo said this, Gabby?” She said “Because he just visited me in my dream and told me to tell you that.”
I hugged Gabby so tight. She immediately fell back asleep without any tossing or turning. It was the strangest thing. But, my heart stopped racing. I stopped worrying. And, I truly believe he communicated to me through Gabby that morning. And, based on things she’ll tell me when she wakes up… I’d be willing to bet that Matteo visits her frequently in her dreams.
A FOURTH SIGN:
Dan had just gone to bed a half hour earlier. He stayed up late working and to check on Rocco, because Rocco had a cold and was having a tough time breathing. It was a little after 1am on Thursday, September 3rd.
The fire alarms throughout the house go off. Every single fire alarm in the house goes off simultaneously. Dan and I both jump out of bed. We’re freaked. Amazingly, Gabby is still sleeping . My mom (visiting at the time) is still sleeping. Rocco is still sleeping and Sarah, our new au pair, is still sleeping. Dan rushes around the upstairs seeing if there is smoke/fire anywhere. I run downstairs, in search of smoke/fire. Nothing. No smoke. No fire.
Kids are awake now. My mom and Sarah are also now awake.
I grab the kids, take them outside, wrap them in blankets, and hold them. They’re confused. We’re now outside the house and we can still hear our house loudly beeping. It’s so loud that I feel like it’s echoing throughout the neighborhood.
Dan is frantically trying to turn the alarms off. On any other occasion when one or all of our fire alarms have gone off (which I could count on one hand, mind you, and we’ve lived in this house for 7 years), you simply press and hold the button on any of the alarms going off for 3 seconds and it will turn the alarm(s) off. Dan is going from room to room doing just this. Nothing is working. He decides to cut power to the house. The house goes black. The alarms stop. He turns the power back on and the alarms all start sounding again. He goes throughout the house removing all the batteries from each and every one of the fire alarms. They’re still loudly beeping. Then, he kills the power throughout the house again. And at least 15 minutes (if not more) after the start of this… the alarms FINALLY stop. FINALLY.
My ears were still ringing. All I could think was… Matteo. He did this. The kid loved fire trucks.
So, I talk Dan into calling the fire department just to make sure we’re not missing something. We haven’t exactly been free of unexpected and uncommon events in our life for the past 8+ weeks.
I rock Rocco back to sleep with a bottle when the fire department arrives. My mom is reading to Gabby. Rocco is sleeping in my arms, drinking his milk, and reaching his open hand out to touch something in front of him. And, I sit there thinking… Matteo? Are you here with us? Did you do this tonight? Can Rocco see/feel your little face right now?
The fire department leaves. No signs of any electrical, smoke, fire or gas issues. They tell Dan we might just have one faulty alarm that set the entire system off.
How strange that this has never happened before? How strange that this happened shortly after 1am… during the timeframe that I am so sure Matteo died? There are so many odd/strange dreams or things happening during this crazy timeframe at night.
Sure. One could probably find some sort of explanation for most of these things. Perhaps there was a little animal that jumped onto Matteo’s zebra horse toy. Perhaps, there was some strange static energy in the house that made the TV turn on by itself. Maybe Gabby’s dream and the time she woke up to tell me Matteo’s message was pure coincidence with a time I was so scared. Perhaps we have a faulty fire alarm system… and it’s just coincidence that it happened to go off in the middle of the night… during the hours I feel Matteo died, 8+ weeks after he died.
It’s all what you allow yourself to believe, I guess.
Do you believe in paranormal experiences or a sixth sense? Again… feel free to share your personal stories in the comments. I would love to read them... as would other followers, I'm sure.

Yes I do and I truly (TRULY) believe that Matteo has been giving you signs. I have had signs from my mother starting the night she passed. I will give your two examples, that night I sat up in our family room crying and the lamp next to me started to flicker. It did this several times and I knew it was her. That buld never burned out and it also happened to me in the hospital once and also other times. I always say Hi Mom! The other is that above my parents sink was a electric clock. It stopped running the day she died. No other power was out. When we got home from the funeral several days later it started running again. We believe it was a sign that she was alright.
If all women could get these signs from their children who have passed I think they would feel some comfort.
Oh I truly believe that he is sending you signs as well. I found your post so heartwarming. I have experienced the feeling my grandma was in the room with me, and more recently FELT that my dog who had died was right there. It was so strong.
You don't know me, but I pray for you.
My story is from when I was a senior in high school. One Saturday evening one of my best friends and one of his buddies, who were both from a town about an hours drive away, came to visit for the evening. When they were leaving, my friend gave me a really big and extra long hug - not that unusual, but longer than normal. Then he looked me in the eye, put his hand on my cheek and said very seriously and very quietly, "Carrie, I am really going to miss you." I chuckled and said something like "Okay!?!? I'll miss you too, at least until we go camping next weekend! And besides I am not moving to college for another two months! I'll see you lots this summer!" He just smiled sweetly and hugged me again and then he kissed me on the nose. We were best friends, hugged lots, but never kissed - not even on the nose! And besides that he never called me Carrie, he always had some silly name for me like Shorty, Curly or Muffinhead. At that moment I figured he was just trying to be quiet because it was late and my parents were sleeping - but it was still very, very strange.
He died in a car accident on the way home. Other than his friend that was driving, I was the last person he saw, the last person he hugged, the last person he kissed. Even after 19 years I still get chills and tears thinking about it. The very last thing my friend - my fun loving, crazy, always joking, and never-ever serious best friend - said to me was "I am really going to miss you"
The next morning when I got "the call", it all made sense! He was truly saying good-bye. He was saying goodbye in a way that best friends would if they were not going to see each other again.
I have often stopped at his grave, many times it was only briefly - just to say Hi. Then one time when it had been a long time since since I had gone to the cemetary. I was feeling really thinking about him and wanted to stop, it would be the only chance I had on that trip home. I really only had a few minutes to stop, but I was going to stop - just to say Hi. Unfortunatley it was pouring rain and I knew I wouldn't be able to get out of the car, but I thought at least I could stop on the road where I could see the back of his head stone.
As soon as I turned the last corner into the cemetary it stopped raining, literally from an absolute downpour to no rain at all! I was able to get out and I was surprised that there was a bench perfectly facing his head stone - the perfect seat to sit and talk to him. I ended up saying more than Hi, I stayed for a long time and poured my heart out, I was having a rough patch at that point in my life. It felt good to 'talk' to him again. I felt much better as I stood up and the moment I leaned over to put my hand on his head stone to say "See ya later buddy!" the rain came pouring down and I was soaked by the time I ran the few yards to my car!
Every time I have gone back to visit his grave that bench has never been placed in that position again. It is always a couple rows away and facing away from his grave.
So yes, I believe that there are signs and even a sixth sense about death. I believe that he somehow knew he would die that night and wanted to say goodbye to me. I believe that he knew I needed a friend to talk to that day and so the rain stopped and the bench was placed so I was able sit and really talk to him. I came to some conclusions that day that set my life on a different, better path.
I am still praying for you and your family, and today I pray that you are finding comfort in these signs that I am sure is Matteo reaching out to comfort you.
I have been reading your blog for a little while now. Words can't express how much my heart hurts for you and your family. I do believe that your beautiful little Matteo is indeed giving you signs.
I also had a similar experience when my father passed away, almost 3 years ago. My father was a wonderful man and very loving. He would say things like "I love my little girl" but NEVER outright said "I love you" and I didn't say it either to him (even though I wrote it on cards). Well, when he was dying in the hospital, I knew that I had to actually say the words. And I did -- twice. It felt really good and I know my dad was touched. However, he was still unable to say the words back. I was okay with this... I knew how very much he loved me, he just had trouble saying the words.
Well, a few nights after he passed away, I has a VERY vivid "dream". All of a sudden he was in the room with me. He looked at me and said "I love you, too" and then he was gone. Now, of course, it could have just been a dream... but I really think it was him, coming back to tell me the words he couldn't actually say when he was alive.
Since he has passed, he is in my dreams on a weekly basis... but they are very obviousy just dreams. It was definitely more than a "dream" when he had told me -- finally -- that he had loved me, too.
When my grandpa passed away 7 years ago, It was raining so hard outside. But once we had everyone in the family room, the sun came out, and the rays came right into the window~I think it was a sign that he was going to be ok. It still gives me chills!
Jodi I read your blog all the time, and pray for you often! Keep strong!
YES, YES, YES! Oh, Jodi I am so glad that you have been getting signs from Matteo! I really had been praying you would.
I have had many different signs over the years. My favorite is shortly after my sister-in-law past away. She had been living with us and was in her early 20's. My kids were VERY close to her. A week after she died, my then 4yr old Jax woke up one morning and said, "Aunt Robin came to visit me last night. I woke up and a bright light was coming to me and then Aunt Robin was there. And we just talked. Then I went back to sleep." And then he bounced away... it gave me chills and all of us comfort.
I am so glad Matteo is letting you know he is ok and watching over all of you!
YES, YES, YES. So glad that matteo is letting you all know he is still with you watching over you with love. I believe spirits can visit you when you are open to accepting them. Treasure those visits....so glad you shared.
Yes, I also do believe we get signs...My mom passed away a little over a year ago and she has been here 3 times now to visit me...I LOVE it when she stops by.
Also, my mom had an identical twin who was tragically burned in a house fire and lived 3 weeks. my mom knew the moment she passed away and her sister came to visit her and tell her she was ok and to keep going and not let her death bring her down. My dad also visited my mom after he passed away. It is just so comforting to have them give us signs.
Oh, yes. I do believe in signs and it sounds like Matteo is sending you lots of messages so you know he's ok and misses you, too. My sister was killed in a car accident 9 years ago. I knew before I answered the phone that morning what the news would be. Later that evening as I drove the 90 minutes to my parent's house I know she was riding with me. We had a great conversation, where I got to tell her how angry I was that she hadn't buckled up and she got to tell me to keep her kids close to my parents. She sent me a humming bird in January (I live in Utah so hummingbirds aren't around in January...) while I was talking with another sister on the phone. She visited me a few times the first year after she died but it's been a long time since her last stop. Additionally, my dad passed away this summer. Every time I visit my mom I can feel he's sitting in his spot on the front porch. His dog knows it and my mom knows it. That's just where Dad has decided to hang out and where we can visit with him a bit if we get lonely. Take comfort in your signs from Matteo. I'm sure he's thinking of you as much as you are him.
I believe completely in the "signs" that come to us that our loved ones are near although they are no longer physically with us. I also believe that when we dream about people who have passed that they are really visits with them from "the other side".
The first thing I wanted to share is much like Gabby's dream about Matteo. My brother passed away suddenly on 12/26/06. Shortly after he passed away I had a vivid dream in which my brother told me to tell our mother that he was OK and that he loved us. In the dream he was wearing an orange scarf (that I had never seen before and thought was pretty ugly). I happened to mention the scarf to my mother and she told me that it was his favorite scarf in college. I feel that the scarf was a validation of sorts because I didn't know that he had an orange scarf.
It is interesting that no matter what the age, whether it be a 3 year old or a 43 year old, that the sibling visits the sibling in a dream to then reassure the mother.
The other story I wanted to share is about my friend who lost her husband on September 11th. She was in Italy last week with her three children and her sister. Her oldest daughter, now a junior in college, is the spending the semester abroad. Before her husband died in 2001 they traveled a lot. He was the driving force behind their family's exploration and excitement. Since he died, my friend has not been very adventurous. As they sat in an Italian cafe last week they were commenting on how much their husband/father would have enjoyed this trip. The waiter came over and wanted to show my friend's 18 year old son a toothpick trick.
The irony about the toothpick trick is that it is the exact trick that a waiter on a cruise ship had shown their then 7 year old son when they had traveled to Alaska as a family in 1998. As they sat in the cafe in Italy they all realized that their husband/father was indeed there with them. That was his sign...the toothpick trick. It was wonderful that they could all enjoy the "sign" together.
I keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I think about your new little one as well. Matteo is taking care of you all and he always will. I hope Matteo keeps the "signs" coming to you fast and furious so you can continue to take comfort in them.
All I can say is believe, talk, listen. I have a sesame street kitchen that my oldest daughter received as a gift when she was little. She is 11 now. My grandma died 2 weeks before her birth and had anticipated meeting her for months. The kitchen is in our attic and EVERY time I go up there the phone rings on the thing. Funny enough, it didn't work to begin with and the phone is long gone. We haven't ever replaced the batteries either and when we try to make it work, it doesn't. We will never get rid of the kitchen nor have any of our other kids been able to play with it. It actually keeps us up if it is out of the attic. I love it and I always say hello to her when it rings and talk about how I am.
I also have an aunt who died of breast cancer in 1988. Her favorite song was River Road. Once in awhile I'll start singing the song and know she is around. Embrace it all. It's real!!!
I haven't commented but one other time but I do visit frequently and have continued to hold you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
After reading what you wrote on signs from Matteo I just wanted to add that "Yes, yes yes!" I truly believe he is with you and sending you signs to let you know he is okay!
Before my grandmother passed away I might have not known what to think but as with your baby, my grandmother, has continued to let me know that she is still with me from time to time.
The night she passed away my parents and I were rushing to be by her side as the doctors had just called to let us know that it wouldn't be very long. On the way, in the car, I was crying hard not knowing how I could bring myself to say goodbye. From out of nowhere I HEARD her voice and she said "Please don't cry anymore my love. I'm okay. I love you". By the time we arrived she was already gone but the minute that she passed on correlated almost exactly to the moment I heard her voice in the car.
Ten years later on the anniversary of her death I spent the day trying to remember what significant event had happened that day. Strangely enough I'd never forgotten the day but for some reason that year I couldn't quite pinpoint what important thing I was forgetting. That night I had a vivid dream with her in it and we talked and spend time as though she'd never been gone. Suddenly I awoke, remembered what the day was, and when I looked at the clock it was almost ten years to THE MINUTE of when she had passed away. The next morning I called my mom and joked that although I had almost forgotten the anniversary "Grandma certainly wouldn't let me forget!" And that definitely would have been true of her spunky personality!
In moments that I have wavered in my faith or have doubted life beyond death I am always grateful for the gift my grandmother has given me in letting me know that although she has gone on, she is always with us.
My Grandfather died when I was 9 years old. My sister and I loved him so, so much. I still miss him so much 12 years later.
A few days after he died my sister asked my Mom if she saw Ito (short for Abuelito - grandfather in spanish) the night before. My Mom looked at my sister obviously puzzled. Marlo said that during the night Ito came to her from the hallway of our house asking her where my Mom was, then telling her, "Tell your Mom I love her", then he walked into my Mom's room. My Mom cried uncontrollably obviously, just hearing that from my sister.
I remember questioning my sister - if she really saw him or not - and being mostly jealous that if he did come, he came to her and not me. Now, I choose to think that she really did see him, only because it leads me to believe that there is life beyond this life on earth. That all the people that I've lost throughout my life, my grandparents, I will get to see them again in heaven. I think of them all watching over Ellie, keeping her safe, and praying for her. When I pray, I call on them for extra prayers (may sound weird, but it gives me comfort).
I don't doubt for a second that your family has an angel in Matteo flying around watching over you guys. Keep looking for the signs, I'm sure he's there :)
I've been occasionally reading your blog since Matteo died, and my heart breaks everytime. I believe that he's visiting you and sending you and your family signs.
My father died when I was fourteen years old. he was paralyzed on the right due to a stroke, so he was staying in a nursing home. The day before he died my sister and I visited him. On the way out he was coughing and I said to my sister, "maybe we should bring it to the staff's attention", but we never did. That night at 1:03 am we got the call that my father had died. For a very long time I blamed myself. I should have told the nurses, then maybe he wouldn't have died. One night a few years later, I woke up sobbing because I had a dream that my dad came to visit me and he told me to stop blaming myself. That it wasn't my fault. I truly believe that he came to visit me that night.
I think of you and your family often. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and listen for my son, and I think about you and Matteo, and I get up just to make sure my son is ok.
